Theoretical Framework

Kolb’s experiential learning cycle (1984) and Honey and Mumford’s learning styles (1992)
Research topic: Integrating weblog in teaching sentence variety in English Language Writing: the implication on English Language Writing Curriculum.
Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) can be more effective when students are required to do something rather than just talk about it. Students need to work together as a team to produce academic outputs (Klemm and Snell, 1996).This process of constructivism enables students to build their own knowledge and develop understanding by getting involved in activities and reflecting on their own experiences.
Kolb’s experiential learning model supports this constructivist approach (1984). It is based on the sound premise that much of what we learn, we learn by doing, but the students need to experience all stages of the learning cycle in order to learn effectively.CMC can be used to provide students with opportunities to apply knowledge and test theories in a reciprocal relationship with their fellow students and lecturers as co-learners. Honey and Mumford used Kolb’s model to classify learners according to their learning styles, identifying activists, reflectors, theorists and pragmatists (1992).

Video Assignment

Salam,

Again, time flies. We are approaching the end of the semester. It's been hectic that I didn't realise this week is the last week of class. There're still a lot that I've not done for the class. Working and studying are two things that I'm doing now apart from being a mother to four children, a wife to one man, a child to my parents and the list goes on.

Nevertheless, life goes on. You've gotta do what you've gotta do but there are times in which I feel that I've not done things at the best of my ability.

Today I've been doing this video assignment for the class. A few problems since the beginning. Firstly is the problem with Ulead. Installed but problem with my laptop, apparently it's not as competent. Dr Sharifah was kind enough to let me do it on Window Movie Maker. A lot easier but I had to do it over and over again since it kept on disappearing for God knows what; it's the laptop. Eventually, I managed to do it with a lot of patient and passion. Now it's the time to post it on the blog...see how long will I spend on that....

Activity of the day 6 August

Students' learning is a process in which students are exposed to new concepts and content. The process involves thinking (cognitive) and the application of what has been learned in terms of behaviours. To ensure learning takes place, changes are expected to be seen at the end of the day. In the language context, students learn a language in a formal setting for instance schools or other institutions. Even though a lot of them may have acquired the language, formal learning has to take place in order to understand a well-structured language.

ICT is such a phenomenon. In the past learning and teaching took place in a classroom environment between teacher and students while the instruments used were blackboards, chalks, big white papers and the list of traditional gadjets goes on. However, since the emergence of ICT, the teaching methodology had to go through a series of evolvement. Teachers and students have to be exposed to the new method of teaching and learning via this new technology, for instance using powerpoint, videos etc. This obviously will give more motivation to students since all of them were born in the technology era.

Salam to everyone,

It's hard when we think it's hard. Getting to know how to do this stuff our lecturer asked us to do which is to design a banner for the blog. I once had a blog but somehow left it just like that for quite some time till I even forgot the password, normal I guess. But when Dr Sharifah said that not having our own blogs is similar to living in another planet, it's like a slap on the face, it's a wake up call, hello Liza, where've you been? I guess I am a paper-pen type of person still.

Being in this class (Educational Technology) is like me in another planet. Not that I have never used technology in my teaching life but I always use ready made templates gotten from somewhere, but in this class, creativity counts. Then comes the question...am I creative or is it too late for me to make myself creative? Looking for pictures, cutting, lassoing (is there such a word as this?) pasting, resizing them etc. are things which I don't do best. I am trying, but still not to the satisfactory level just as yet. It's been 4 weeks already and I'm still here, trying to get the hang of it...hope the creativity will appear before I know it.

Till then. Cheerio. Wassalam
